Maghar's Pogrom

Greetings! Thank you for visiting this webpage. Maghar is a village in the Galilee in the North of Israel. Of its 18,000 inhabitants, 58% are Druze, 19% Muslims and 23% Christians. The 70,000 Druze, who are 1.1% of Israeli society, originated in Egypt in the 11th century. Their male youth serve in the Israeli army and they are regarded by the Israeli authorities as having a separate nationality from the remaining Arab community even though their language and culture is Arabic. The "pogrom", as Dan Ronen, the Israeli Northern District commander termed it, took place between Thursday and Sunday February 10th- 13th 2005, following the allegation of a rumor that was spread about a Christian youth who published photographs of Druze girls in the nude on the Internet. The attacks blazed out on Friday February 11th and the Druze looted stores belonging to Christians, burning their houses and destroying their vehicles. On Saturday gangs of Druze numbering 2000-3000 again attacked Christian neighborhoods driving Christian families away from the village to neighboring cities. The attack was a disastrous and destructive act that left the Christian community of Maghar dispersed and bruised both psychologically and economically. It later turned out that the allegation was false and a recent declaration by the police pointed out that the person behind these rumors was a Druze teenager and that there was no trace of such photographs on the Internet.
